Optimal Level of Arousal | Imagery and Self-Talk | Avoiding Burnout

Imagery and self-talk are two techniques used in enhancing performance.

Imagery

Imagery may be defined as using all the senses to re-create or create an experience in the mind.

Here are some of the many ways in which it can be applied to enhancing sport performance:

  • Learning and practicing sport skills.
  • Solving technique problems.
  • Learning and practicing strategy.
  • Perceptual problem solving.
  • Arousal control.
  • Stress management.
  • Goal setting.
  • Self-confidence.
  • Attention focusing and refocusing.
  • Increasing self-awareness.
  • Controlling physiological responses.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Recovery from injury.

Self-Talk

There is a direct correlation between self-confidence and success.  Confidence is influenced and developed not only by successful experiences and reinforcement from others, but also by positive thinking.  This positive thinking comes from self-talk which can build confidence and facilitate learning and performance.  Thoughts affect self-confidence, self-concept, and behavior.

Ways to use positive self-talk:
  • Build confidence by using positive affirmation statements.
  • Team Slogans.
  • Skill acquisition by using cue words like 'up & in.'
  • Attention control by using words to help focus on the present.
  • Controlling effort by using phrases like 'go for it' or 'easy does it.'
  • Negative thought stopping by using interrupting trigger words.
