Burnout

Here are some of the many characteristics of ensuing burnout:
 
  • Sleep disturbances.
  • Loss of self-confidence.
  • Drowsiness and apathy.
  • Quarrelsomeness.
  • Irritability.
  • Emotional and motivational imbalance.
  • Excessive weariness that is prolonged.
  • Lack of appetite.
  • Fatigue.
  • Depression.
  • Anxiety.
  • Anger/hostility.
  • Confusion.

Some of the causes may be:

  • Length of the total season.
  • Monotony of training.
  • Feelings of claustrophobia.
  • Lack of positive reinforcement.
  • Feeling of helplessness.
  • Abusiveness from authorities.
  • Stringent rules.
  • High levels of competitive stress.
  • Perceived overload.
  • Boredom.
  • Perceived low accomplishment.

Coaches can help prevent burnout using these techniques:
 
  • Schedule time-outs.
  • Allow athletes to make some choices in decision making.
  • Plan mental practice periods.
  • Motivate athletes using positive reinforcement.
  • Handle postcompetition tension.
